    Oscar Night: February 24, 2013

    The 21st Annual Oscar Party: "And the Winner Is..."

    We are now 21! The Washington, DC Film Society presents the 21st annual "And the Winner Is" Oscar night party.

    It’s LINCOLN against the field! Or is it ARGO? Will Spielberg or Affleck triumph? Or will this historical epic go the way of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN? We’ll all know when the Oscars are handed out February 24th. You say your tickets to the Hollywood Dolby Theater haven’t arrived? Not to worry. You can join hundreds of your fellow film fans at the Washington, DC Film Society’s annual bash, “AND THE WINNER IS….” and watch THE 85th Academy Awards broadcast LIVE ON THE BIG SCREEN.

    Doors will open at 6:30pm on Sunday, February 24,, 2013 at the Arlington Cinema ‘N’ Drafthouse (2903 Columbia Pike in Arlington, VA). The Red Carpet Broadcast starts at 7:00pm and the main event gets underway at 8:00pm.

    DC Film Society friends, the knowledgeable and entertaining local film critics, Bill Henry and Tim Gordon, will once again guide us through the ins and outs of Hollywoodland. Will it be Jessica Chastain or Jennifer Lawrence? Alan Arkin or Robert De Niro? Can anyone top Anne Hathaway’s solo in Les Miserables? Or will there be a surprise dark horse? You will have the chance to outguess the experts in our “Predict The Winners” contest, participate in trivia contests throughout the evening and bid in our silent auction (cash or check only please) on all kinds of neat items such as film and theatre gift certificates and tickets and movie promotional goodies. There will be autographed film posters and DVDs signed by filmmakers who have been in the DC area for screenings over the last year - some by a few very big names in Hollywood (more details to come). Of course the Arlington Cinema ‘N’ Drafthouse is always well stocked with a broad selection of tasty food and a variety of beverages to satisfy your cinematic appetite.

    This 21st annual FUN-raiser will once again be held in support of Filmfest DC, the Film Society’s parent organization, the Washington, DC International Film festival. Tickets are $15 for BASIC members, $20 for the general public and guests and FREE for GOLD members. You can purchase tickets online via PayPal beginning February 1 or purchase at the door (cash or check only) beginning at 6:00pm on February 24th.

    The Cinema Lounge

    The next meeting of the Cinema Lounge will be on Monday, February 18 at 7:00pm. This month's topic is "Great Movie Cliches, Why We Love and Hate Them."

    The Cinema Lounge, a film discussion group, meets the third Monday of every month (unless otherwise noted) at 7:00pm at
    Barnes and Noble, 555 12th St., NW in Washington, DC (near the Metro Center Metro stop). The meeting area is on the second floor, special events area. You do not need to be a member of the Washington DC Film Society to attend. Cinema Lounge is moderated by Adam Spector, author of the DC Film Society's Adam's Rib column.

    FILMS

    American Film Institute Silver Theater

    "Quentin Tarantino Retro and the Roots of Django" looks at some of Tarantino's earlier films and also some of the Spaghetti Westerns he cited as inspiration of Django Unchained, including some films by Sergio Corbucci. Titles include Django (Sergio Corbucci, 1966) digitally remastered and starring Franco Nero, The Hellbenders (Sergio Corbucci, 1966), The Great Silence (Sergio Corbucci, 1968) in a 35mm print, Navajo Joe (Sergio Corbucci, 1966), and Death Rides a Horse (Giulio Petrone, 1967). More in March. Films directed by, written by, or based on stories by Tarantino include Natural Born Killers, Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction with more in March.

    "Screen Valentines: Great Movie Romances" is a series of films for Valentine's month. Titles include Ninotchka starring Greta Garbo ("Garbo Laughs") in a new 35mm print, Letter from an Unknown Woman, Summer with Monika, A Man and a Woman, Valley Girl, and The Way We Were. More in March.

    "Reel Estate: The American Home on Film" is a series co-presented by the National Building Museum. Titles in February are Meet Me in St. Louis, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House and Auntie Mame with more in March and April.

    "Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock" focuses on a selection of Hitchcock films with screenplays credited to Alma Reville. Titles include Psycho, Rich and Strange, Secret Agent, Sabotage and Young and Innocent. More in March and April.

    A series of films by Howard Hawks begins in February. Films during February include The Criminal Code, Dawn Patrol, His Girl Friday, Bringing Up Baby, and Twentieth Century with more in March and April.

    Special events include the World Premiere of The Legend of Cool "Disco" Dan (Joseph Pattisal, 2012), a documentary on the graffiti artist on February 23 at 8:00pm (sold out, standby only) and 10:45pm. On February 1 at 7:30pm is House of Frankenstein (Erle C. Kenton, 1944) with Count Gore de Vol in person. On February 2 at 8:45pm is Groundhog Day (Harold Ramis, 1993), a 20th anniversary celebration. On February 9 at 5:30pm and February 10 at 6:45pm is a 65th anniversary show of The Red Shoes (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, 1948). Also three shows of Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1942).

    The "Opera on Film" for February is Giuseppe Verdi's "Don Carlo" performed by the Teatro alla Scala, Milan on February 10 at 1:00pm.

    The "Ballet on Film" for February is "An Evening with Sol León and Paul Lightfoot" on February 3 and 4 and "La Bayadére" performed by the Bolshoi Ballet, Moscow on February 19 at 1:00pm.

    Freer Gallery of Art
    The "Iranian Film Festival 2013" continues in February. On February 1 at 7:00pm and February 3 at 2:00pm is Rhino Season (Bahman Ghobadi, 2012); on February 8 at 7:00pm and February 10 at 2:00pm is The Last Step (Ali Mosaffa, 2012); on February 15 and 7:00pm and February 17 at 2:00pm is No Men Allowed (Rambod Javan, 2011); and on February 22 at 7:00pm and February 24 at 2:00pm is The Iran Job (Till Schauder and Sara Nodjoumi, 2012), a documentary about American basketball player Kevin Sheppard who accepted a job to play in Iran. The two directors will be there to answer questions about the film.

    On February 13 at 7:00pm is a special screening of When China Met Africa (Marc and Nick Francis, 2010), a documentary about China's expanding presence in Africa. Nick Francis will take part in a Skype Q&A following the film.

    National Gallery of Art
    "Isaki Lacuesta: The Artist's Ruse" is a series of six films by the Catalan director and writer. On February 3 at 4:30pm is Garbo the Spy (Edmon Roch, 2008), about the WWII double agent Juan Pujol Garcia; on February 10 at 4:30pm is Cravan vs. Cravan (2002), about Arthur Cravan, poet, pugilist and nephew of Oscar Wilde; on February 17 at 4:30pm is All Night Long (2010), a documentary about Ava Gardner and her interest in Spain; on February 23 at 2:00pm is The Condemned (2009); on February 23 at 4:00pm is The Legend of Time (2006); and on February 24 at 4:30pm is The Clay Diaries (2011) followed by The Double Steps (2011).

    Art films and special events in February include Ashes and Diamonds (Andrzej Wajda, 1958) on February 2 at 2:30pm; an illustrated talk by Bruce Goldstein "The Nicholas Brothers: Born to Dance" on February 9 at 2:30pm; a Cine-Concert O Mimi San (1914) shown with One a Minute (1919), on February 16 at 2:00pm, music by Andrew Simpson and introduction by Brian Taves from the Library of Congress. On February 16 at 4:30pm is Nothing But a Man (Michael Roemer and Robert M. Young, 1964).

    Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
    On February 17 from 11:00am to 5:30pm is a marathon screening of films by and about Ai Weiwei, starting with So Sorry (2011). At 12:15pm is Without Fear or Favor (Alan Yentob, 2010); at 1:30pm is Fairytale (2007) and at 4:15pm is Disturbing the Peace (2009).

    Museum of American History
    On February 23 at 1:30pm is a documentary Harvest of Loneliness about the bracero guest worker program, followed by a round-table discussion.

    Smithsonian American Art Museum
    On February 20 at 7:00pm is The Artist (2011), last year's winner of five Academy Awards, shown in the Kogod Courtyard.

    Washington Jewish Community Center
    On February 10 at 3:00pm is Soul Food Junkies (Byron Hurt) with special guest Michael W. Twitty, culinary historian. On February 12 at 7:30pm is The Five Houses of Leah Goldberg (Yair Qedar), about the Israeli poet with special guest Annie Kantar who will discuss Goldberg's life and work and read from her poems. On February 17 at noon is White: A Memoir in Color (Joel Katz, 2012), part of the JCC's symposium "Race in America: Where Are We Now?" with special guest Joel Katz and others.

    Goethe Institute
    "Mapping Democracy in Film" is a series of documentary and feature films presenting individual insights into the everyday practices of democracy and its impacts on people. On February 4 at 6:30pm is Raw Material (Christos Karakepelis, 2011) from Greece; on February 11 at 6:30pm is Democracy Under Attack: An Intervention (Romuald Karmakar, 2012) with the director present to introduce and discuss the documentary; and on February 21 at 6:00pm is American Casino (Andrew and Leslie Cockburn, 2009), followed by Marx Reloaded (Jason Barker, 2011) at 8:00pm.

    National Geographic Society
    The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour will run from January 29 through February 2. See the best films from that film festival.

    All five films nominated for Best Foreign Language Film will be shown in the program "Global Glimpses." On February 15 at 7:00pm is Kon Tiki from Norway; on February 16 at 5:00pm is Amour from Austria; on February 16 at 8:00pm is A Royal Affair from Denmark; on February 17 at 4:30pm is War Witch from Canada; and on February 17 at 7:00pm is No from Chile. A series pass is available.

    French Embassy
    On February 12 at 7:00pm is Angèle et Tony (Alix Delaporte, 2011) set in a fishing village of Normandy.

    The Japan Information and Culture Center
    On February 13 at 6:30pm is NANA (Kentaro Otani, 2005), based on the manga by Ai Yazawa.

    Arlington Arts and Artisphere
    On February 1 at 8:00pm is Reservoir Dogs (Quentin Tarantino, 1992). For Valentine's Day on February 14 at 8:00pm is Pillow Talk (Michael Gordon, 1959) starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day. On February 16 at 8:00pm is Orange Juice in Bishops Garden (Otessa Ghadar), followed by a discussion with the makers.

    National Archives
    On February 4 at noon is "A Tribute to Rosa Parks" on her 100th birthday and a screening of the documentary Mighty Times: The Legacy of Rosa Parks (2002) introduced by William S. Pretzer.

    On February 15 at noon is "Apollo to the Moon," a program of films including Debrief: Apollo 8 and Eagle Has Landed: The Flight of Apollo 11.

    The 9th Annual Showcase of Academy Award-Nominated Documentaries and Shorts takes place February 20-24.

    Documentary Feature Nominees: On February 20 at 7:00pm is Searching for Sugar Man (Malik Bendjelloul and Simon Chinn); on February 21 at 7:00pm is The Gatekeepers (Dror Moreh, Philippa Kowarsky, and Estelle Fialon); on February 22 at 7:00pm is How to Survive a Plague (David France and Howard Gertler); on February 23 at 7:00pm is The Invisible War (Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering) and on February 24 at 4:00pm is 5 Broken Cameras (Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi).

    University of Maryland, Hoff Theater
    On February 1 at 3:15pm is a roundtable discussion of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, featuring Luka Arsenjuk, School of Languages, Literatures, & Cultures, Saverio Giovacchini, Dept. of History, Christina Larocco, Dept. of History, Brian Real, College of Information Studies, Arturo Serrano, Visiting Fullbright Scholar, Dept. of English, and Zita Nunes, Dept. of English.

    On February 21 at 5:30pm is Au Bonheur des Dames (Julien Duvivier, 1030), a silent film screening with live accompaniment by Andrew Simpson.

    Smithsonian Associates
    40th Anniversary screening of Cabaret. On February 22 at 6:30pm is the landmark musical Cabaret (Bob Fosse, 1972). Joel Grey who received one of the film's eight Oscars will be in attendance to answer questions at this restored digital presentation. The evening begins with a reception during which artifacts from the Warner Bros. archives will be on view.

    American University
    On February 6 at 7:00pm is The Face of Russia, a three part documentary series that explores the political, theological, and social history of Russia through art. This episode focuses on 20th century Russian music and cinema, with analysis and speculation as to how communism's demise affects these art forms.

    Reel Affirmations XTra
    The February film is North Sea Texas (Bavo Defurne, 2011) from Belgium. (time and date TBA) at the Carnegie Institute of Science, 1530 P Street NW. Reel Affirmations Xtra is a once-a-month screening; series passes are available.

    American University
    "Restaurants and Road Trips" is a series of films shown at American University's Bender Library in the Mudbox. On February 8 at 6:00pm is 180 Degrees South (Chris Malloy, 2010) and on February 22 at 6:00pm is The Darjeeling Limited (Wes Anderson, 2007). More in March and April.

    Busboys and Poets
    On February 18 at 7:00pm is Color Outside the Lines, about a tattoo artist, shown at the 14th and V location. On February 13 at 6:00pm is Raw Opium: Pain, Pleasure, Profits, a documentary, shown at the 5th and K location. Also at the 5th and K location is Urban Dragons on February 24 at 6:00pm.     Alliance Francais
    On February 14 at 7:00pm is Les Infidèles (2012), with seven vignettes by seven directors on the humorous subtleties and nuances of male infidelity in its infinite variations. On February 5 at 7:00pm is Odessa, about a migration from Ukraine to NYC to Israel. Check the website for locations.

    George Mason University
    The 5th Annual War on the Silver Screen Film Festival will be held on Febrary 26-28 at 7:00pm in the JC Cinema. This year's theme is "Hollywood's Cold War." Three films from the mid-1980s are to be shown. On February 26 is Red Dawn (1984), on February 27 is Rocky IV (1985) and on February 28 is Top Gun (1986). All films begin at 7:00pm and a discussion follows each screening.

    On February 6 at 4:30pm is the documentary Beneath the Blindfold (Kathy Berger and Ines Sommer) about survivors of torture living in the US. The filmmakers will be present for discussion.



    FILM FESTIVALS

    DC Shorts Film Festival
    On February 22 at 7:00pm and 9:00pm, February 23 at 7:00pm and 9:00pm and February 24 at 12:00 noon and 2:00pm is "DC Shorts Wins," a showcase of award-winning films from previous DC Shorts.

    REELAbilities Disabilities Film Festival
    This festival takes place February 7-14 at several locations including the Angelika Film Center, The DC Public Library, Cinema Arts Theater, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Floris United Methodist Church, George Mason University, Northern Virginia Community College, and the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia. Titles include Mary and Max, Warrior Champions, Ocean Heaven, Silent Games, Shooting Beauty, Aphasia, Musical Chairs and more. Short films, animation and feature-length films from the US, Israel, China, Australia, and Spain are all part of the festival. See the website for more information.

    William and Mary Global Film Festival
    "Film and Youth" is the theme of this year's festival which runs from February 14-17. Global and local films, shorts and features, will be shown.



    FILM-RELATED LECTURES & SEMINARS

    Library of Congress
    On February 14 at noon is a lecture: "The Lost Tycoon: Rediscovering George Kleine, Reframing Early American Cinema." Kluge Fellow Joel Frykholm examines early Hollywood through the life of one of its first captains, George Kleine—why he drifted into historiographical oblivion and why his case is ripe for discovery.

    Also at the Library of Congress on February 19 at noon is a lecture about the Holocaust in Post War German Film. Historian Kobi Kabalek will deliver a lecture titled "Failure and Memory: How the Rescue of Jews During the Holocaust is Depicted in Post War German Film." The event will be held at the Pickford Theater, located on the third floor of the James Madison Building at 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C.
